Gandhinagar, Feb 2 (NationPress) In the past decade, over 118,000 injured birds, primarily affected during the Uttarayan kite-flying festival, have been rescued throughout Gujarat as part of the state's Karuna Abhiyan, according to official statistics from the Forest and Environment Department.
This initiative, which began in 2017, has successfully treated over 129,000 injured birds, boasting an impressive recovery rate exceeding 92%.
Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia noted that the positive results demonstrate ongoing enhancements in rescue coordination and medical facilities. "Ongoing strategic planning and prompt medical attention have been key to maintaining a high survival rate for injured birds annually," he stated.
During this year's Karuna Abhiyan, held from January 10 to January 20, a total of 16,380 birds harmed by kite strings were treated statewide. Among these, 14,690 birds recovered, resulting in a 90% recovery rate.
Rescue operations took place in all 33 districts. Ahmedabad reported the highest figures, with 7,040 birds treated, of which 6,532 were rescued. Surat followed with 4,194 successful rescues out of 4,800 treated cases. Vadodara had 649 rescues from 722 injured birds, while Rajkot saw 553 birds saved from 676 treated. In Gandhinagar, 313 birds were rescued from 329 incidents.
Species data revealed that pigeons comprised the largest percentage of injured birds at 13,636, followed by 905 black kites, 281 crows, 180 sparrow hawks, 137 black ibises, 134 owls, 121 egrets, and 110 parrots.

State Forest and Environment Minister Pravin Mali mentioned that Karuna Abhiyan was initiated with inter-departmental cooperation and the participation of voluntary organizations. To facilitate Karuna Abhiyan 2026, the state established approximately 450 collection centers, over 60 control rooms, and more than 480 treatment facilities. More than 650 veterinary doctors and around 8,000 staff members and volunteers were assigned to the cause.
