Kohima, May 26 (NationPress) An “Innovation NE Week” has commenced in the capital of Nagaland, Kohima, on Monday, aiming to enhance digital literacy and technical education across the northeastern region of India.
This event, organized by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), has brought together participants from every northeastern state.
During the inaugural ceremony, Secretary of MeitY, S. Krishnan, addressed attendees virtually, emphasizing the event's importance in bolstering digital literacy and technical education in the northeast.
He noted that Nagaland has made significant progress, boasting 25 start-ups and a population fluent in English, which benefits the local economy.
Krishnan highlighted that MeitY is dedicated to empowering the northeast through new technologies and mentioned that of the 55 NIELIT centres in India, 20 are situated in the northeast, with the Kohima NIELIT centre being particularly active.
MeitY has provided direct support to the northeastern states in various IT initiatives, including the establishment of new semiconductor facilities in Assam, near Guwahati, aimed at creating job opportunities for local residents, including those from Nagaland.
The Secretary underscored NIELIT's mission to train local individuals, aiming for their successful employment in the market.
Furthermore, he shared details about capacity-building initiatives by NIELIT that have benefited nearly 1.79 lakh youths in the region. He expressed optimism that the “Innovation NE Week” would pave the way for new opportunities.
Dr. Madan Mohan Tripathi, Vice Chancellor and Director General of NIELIT, stated that NIELIT is instrumental in promoting digital literacy and technical education.
He mentioned that with over 56 centres and more than 700 affiliated institutes, NIELIT offers industry-relevant programs in emerging fields such as AI, cybersecurity, IoT, AR/VR, and blockchain technology.
Dr. Tripathi added that NIELIT provides education ranging from skill development to research and functions as a national accreditation body for IT and electronics training.
