New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) Jagadguru Rambhadracharya visited the Triveni Sangam to participate in the auspicious Basant Panchami Amrit Snan during the Maha Kumbh on Monday, taking a holy dip. Addressing the unfortunate stampede that transpired during the Mauni Amavasya ritual, he attributed the calamity to the error of the people.

His remarks emerged amidst ongoing discussions about the tragedy that resulted in 30 fatalities and over 60 injuries.

Rambhadracharya stated, “Today's atmosphere and Snan are of immense importance, as it commemorates the day of Goddess Saraswati's divine appearance. We conducted the Ganga-Jamuna rituals, and the arrangements were commendable, with no significant issues. Nonetheless, the incident on Mauni Amavasya was simply a slight error on the part of the public.”

His observations suggest that the stampede could have been averted had the crowd been more controlled.

The tragic event occurred on January 29, 2025, during the Mauni Amavasya, leading to at least 30 deaths and 60 injuries as a vast number of pilgrims congregated at the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip.

However, reports indicate that the actual death toll could be higher, with some sources claiming that 48 individuals lost their lives, including those from other incidents. Despite this, the Mela police have officially reported 30 fatalities.

Rambhadracharya also addressed a controversial statement from Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, who suggested that those who perished in the Maha Kumbh stampede achieved “moksha (liberation)”.

The Jagadguru remarked, “His statement is incorrect. We express our condolences to the families.”

As a significant gathering of over 5 crore devotees is anticipated on Basant Panchami Amrit Snan, the state government has implemented additional precautionary measures to ensure the orderly sequence of spiritual sects (akharas) for the holy dip.

The Sangam, the site of last week's tragic crowd incident, is adopting a more organized strategy this time to avert overcrowding and any possible mishaps.
