Jammu, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal), initiated by the Modi administration in 2019, has significantly transformed the lives of millions, granting them access to clean tap water. This initiative to supply potable water has achieved notable success nationwide, reaching even remote border regions and hilly areas.
In the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, the JJM has profoundly impacted residents by establishing efficient systems for delivering safe drinking water, a development that has been met with enthusiasm and approval from the community.
As per official statistics, approximately 490 underground water tanks and 376 filtration plants are either operating or nearing completion to guarantee a steady flow of clean drinking water for the locals. While many projects are already functional, others are in their final stages.
In Doda district, around 146 projects have been executed under the JJM gravity pipe network. Out of the 490 planned underground tanks, 447 have been completed, and 125 of the 376 proposed filtration plants are also operational.
A beneficiary of the JJM, Sandeep Kumar, shared with IANS, "Previously, we had to travel 3-4 km to collect water, but thanks to this JJM initiative, water is now available at every door. We owe our gratitude to the Prime Minister for this, as we didn't spend a single rupee."
Bharat Vikas Sharma, Executive Engineer at the Jal Shakti PHE Division, informed IANS, "We currently have 437 reservoirs completed. In the past, villagers had to travel great distances for water, but the government has recognized and addressed this issue."
He noted that the most substantial progress under this initiative has been made in the past two years. Efforts are underway to extend the program to every village in the Doda district.
Notably, the JJM is a key program of the NDA government, initiated in 2019 to ensure that every rural household has access to functional household tap connections with safe and adequate drinking water.
According to official estimates, the JJM initiative has reached 81% coverage nationwide. As of October 22, 2025, over 15.72 crore rural households are reported to have access to safe drinking water via household taps. The central budget allocation of Rs 2,08,652 crores for States and Union Territories has been largely utilized, as stated by the government.
