Revival of Historic Well in Samba Under Jal Jeevan Mission Ensures 16-Hour Water Supply to Households

Samba, Dec 7 (NationPress) The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), initiated by the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, aims to ensure a tap water supply to every household and is witnessing many astonishing success stories.
In the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, a centuries-old well has been revitalized to fulfill the drinking water needs of the local community, receiving commendations from the residents.
This historical well, situated in Uttar Wahani village in the hilly region of Samba, was constructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh approximately 200 to 250 years ago for the benefit of the populace. It has been rejuvenated under the Jal Jeevan Mission initiative.
For many years, the well had fallen into disrepair. The Jal Shakti Department of Samba undertook the cleaning and restoration of this historical water source. Currently, it provides clean water to the local community for 16 hours daily.
Following the well's successful transformation into a reliable water supply, locals have expressed their gratitude towards the Central government and praised the efforts of the Jal Shakti Department and the District Administration.
Many residents have shared their relief from the challenge of accessing clean water. They noted that this initiative not only helped preserve their historical heritage but also established a sustainable water source for the community.
Pawan Kumar Sharma, a local resident, remarked, “Previously, due to the absence of a water reservoir in the hills, people had no choice but to consume contaminated water. However, that is no longer the case. Thanks to the Central government, we now have access to clean and safe drinking water.”
Rajendra Singh, another resident of Samba, stated that the well, established by the Maharajas centuries ago, has become a hidden blessing.
“The well was neglected for many years, but it has been revitalized under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Protective measures have been put in place to ensure the water remains clean, and a water purification unit has also been installed,” he explained.
A representative from the Jal Jeevan Mission informed IANS that during their assessment of water facilities in Samba, locals reflected on the significance and historical importance of this well.
“Currently, between 60,000 to 90,000 gallons of water are being supplied, benefiting over 200 families. This well has proven to be a boon for the villagers, as it has not only provided them with clean water but has also reignited their connections to the heritage associated with the Maharaja-era well,” he added.
