New Delhi, March 1 (NationPress) The Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which offer high-quality medications at reasonable prices, have experienced a remarkable increase in sales by 200 times, helping citizens save a staggering Rs 30,000 crore over the last decade, as reported by the Union government on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras has expanded by 180 times in the past ten years.

Currently, approximately 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras are operational throughout the nation, it mentioned.

Established under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), this public welfare initiative aims to provide quality medicines at affordable rates to the general populace.

Inaugurated in November 2008, the scheme is overseen by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI).

“Over the past decade, the number of Kendras has surged by 180 times, and sales have also skyrocketed more than 200 times. In total, this noble scheme has enabled savings of approximately Rs 30,000 crore for citizens in the last ten years,” stated the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.

Significantly, the PMBJP achieved sales of Rs 1,470 crore (at MRP), resulting in savings of around Rs 7,350 crore for citizens in the financial year 2023-24.

For the current financial year, 2024-25, the PMBJP reported sales of Rs 1,760 crore (at MRP) until February 28, according to the Ministry.

The PMBJP provides around 2,047 drugs and 300 surgical items, which are sold in retail outlets at discounts of 50% to 80% compared to branded medicines.

The Ministry also aims to “establish 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by March 31, 2027 across the nation.”

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers and Health and Family Welfare, J.P. Nadda, on Saturday commenced a week-long celebration leading up to Jan Aushadhi Diwas.

Jan Aushadhi Diwas is commemorated annually on March 7.

As part of the festivities, the Union Minister launched a Rath (Chariot) along with ten other vehicles carrying information about PMBJP from Nirman Bhawan.

“Citizens must engage in these programs to foster greater awareness and create a jan-andolan for Jan-Aushadhi,” urged Nadda.
