A police constable suffered serious injuries during the shooting incident that occurred late Sunday night.
The assault took place around midnight on September 21 near the Bombay Hotel in the Purni Rai locality.
Authorities reported that individuals riding a white Apache motorcycle, which lacked a license plate, opened fire on the police team. Head Constable Ramsharekh Sharma was struck in the leg by a bullet.
An FIR (No. 65/2025) was filed at the Khalari police station.
Taking the situation seriously, Ranchi SSP Rakesh Ranjan established a special task force led by the Rural SP.
After conducting extensive raids, the team arrested Rahul Das (29), a resident of Baleri village in the Hunterganj police station area of Chatra district, near the Pahi forest along the Rai–Budhmu road.
Police recovered a loaded country-made pistol, ten live cartridges, a white Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and the Apache motorcycle used in the attack from him.
During questioning, it was revealed that Rahul Das had recently been released from Sherghati jail in Bihar and was conspiring to commit a significant crime with his associates.
Authorities stated that he is an active participant in an interstate gang involved in serious crimes such as robbery and dacoity across multiple districts in Jharkhand—including Ranchi, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Giridih—and in Bihar’s Gaya district.
The arrest was made by a team led by DSP Khalari Ramnarayan Choudhary, alongside Khalari police station in charge Jaideep Toppo, Budhmu police station in charge Ritesh Kumar Mahato, sub-inspectors Mukesh Kumar and Ravi Kumar Soni, along with personnel from the armed police.
Police are currently working to identify and apprehend other members of the gang involved in the shooting incident.
