New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) The “Jigyasa” Student–Scientist Connect Programme initiated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been recognized as one of the most significant programs aimed at igniting scientific curiosity among school children, stated Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, on Thursday.
This initiative offers exposure to advanced scientific research and encourages a passion for inquiry from a young age.
In his address in the Rajya Sabha, Singh remarked that the program has benefitted over 14 lakh school children and approximately 80,000 teachers nationwide to date.
Launched in 2017 in cooperation with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), “Jigyasa” immerses students in the realm of science and innovation through visits to CSIR laboratories, interactions with scientists, and practical experiences.
Students acquire knowledge of scientific methodologies and real-world applications through engaging science lectures, workshops, residential programs, hackathons, and hands-on activities.
“A total of 3,900 Jigyasa activities have been executed across 37 CSIR laboratories, showcasing the extensive geographical and institutional reach of the initiative,” Singh commented.
The Minister highlighted the groundbreaking influence of the “Jigyasa Virtual Lab”, developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay in 2021.
“This digital platform features simulations, animations, and interactive learning modules, including 401 resources available in Indian Sign Language, promoting inclusivity for Divyangjan learners. The virtual lab has introduced a crucial digital element to Jigyasa’s outreach, enabling students from remote areas to access premium scientific content without physical barriers,” the Minister explained.
Singh also pointed out the vast involvement in flagship programs under this initiative.
The “Jigyasa Vigyan Mahotsav 2022” saw an impressive turnout with over 30,000 participants and 3,000 content submissions, of which 75 entries received awards. Similarly, the EPIC Hackathon 2024 attracted 960 applications from students across the country.
Out of these applications, 47 students completed summer internships in 18 CSIR laboratories, gaining valuable hands-on mentorship before competing in the final round held at CSIR-IGIB, New Delhi.
Additionally, Singh disclosed that the Jigyasa program received funding of Rs 597.10 lakh in 2021-22, Rs 1,392.63 lakh in 2022-23, Rs 1,650.00 lakh in 2023-24, Rs 1,900.00 lakh in 2024-25, and Rs 1,850.00 lakh in 2025-26.
