Gandhinagar, July 30 (NationPress) Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has landed in Gujarat for a two-day mission focused on rejuvenating the state’s tourism sector, which has suffered a significant downturn following the recent terror incident in Pahalgam.
During his visit, Omar Abdullah plans to explore the Statue of Unity and hold an important meeting with prominent tour operators in Gandhinagar.
On Wednesday evening, he had a discussion with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
This outreach is part of ongoing efforts to restore confidence among travelers and re-establish Jammu and Kashmir as a secure and appealing tourist destination.
“Historically, whenever tourism has thrived in Jammu and Kashmir over the last thirty to forty years, states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Bengal have consistently played a pivotal role,” stated Omar Abdullah, expressing optimism that tourists from Gujarat will soon return in large numbers.
Omar Abdullah has raised critical concerns regarding the security and intelligence shortcomings that led to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, calling for accountability from both the Union government and local authorities.
In a media interaction during his Gujarat trip, Abdullah highlighted that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir acknowledged lapses in intelligence and security.
“If there has been a failure, someone must be held accountable. Although the three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack have been neutralized, no action has been taken against those responsible for the systemic failure,” he remarked.
He also criticized the Centre's long-standing assertions following the abrogation of Article 370. “In 2019, the promise was made that the removal of Article 370 would eradicate terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir. Five years have passed, and terrorists are still being eliminated. What does that indicate about those assurances?” questioned Omar Abdullah.
On April 22, 2025, terrorists targeted unarmed tourists in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Meadow, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals, including Hindu pilgrims, a Nepali national, and a local resident.
The attack, attributed to the Pakistan-backed terror group The Resistance Front, ignited national outrage and raised serious concerns over security protocols. The three terrorists involved were subsequently killed in a counter-operation.
