Jammu, Jan 15 (NationPress) The government of Jammu and Kashmir has appointed a coordination and liaison officer to assist residents and students from the Union Territory currently in Iran.
According to an order from the General Administration Department, Anil Sharma, JKAS, Additional Resident Commissioner for the Jammu and Kashmir government in New Delhi, will serve as the designated officer for coordination with relevant agencies regarding the residents and students living or studying in Iran.
The officer's duties include liaising with the Ministry of External Affairs of India and the appropriate embassy and consular authorities, facilitating information sharing, coordination, and necessary interventions related to the safety, welfare, and travel facilitation of Jammu and Kashmir residents and students in Iran.
Currently, there are numerous students from J&K pursuing various professional courses, including MBBS, in Iran. Additionally, many pilgrims from the Shia Muslim community in J&K are in Iran to pay respects at sacred sites.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has discussed the situation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Abdullah mentioned in a post on X, "I just spoke with EAM @DrSJaishankar ji concerning the dynamic situation in Iran. He shared insights on the ground realities and the plans being enacted by the Ministry of External Affairs. I appreciate his reassurance that all necessary measures will be taken to protect the interests and lives of J&K students and residents currently in Iran."
Opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister, has also called on the Centre to prioritize the safety of Indian residents and students in Iran.
In a post on X, she expressed, "Thousands of students from various parts of India, including Kashmir, are stranded in Iran due to the current unstable situation. This has caused significant fear and anxiety among parents concerned about their children's well-being. I urge @DrSJaishankar and @MEAIndia to act swiftly to ensure their safe return."
