Is the Karnataka Government Falling Short of Revenue Targets?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 16 (NationPress) BJP Rajya Sabha Member from Karnataka, Lahar Singh Siroya, expressed on Friday that the overall performance of the Karnataka government has declined and that it is unlikely to meet its revenue targets, according to its own evaluations.
Quoting a news report, Lahar Singh mentioned that the government is expected to fall short of its revenue goals for the financial year 2025-26.
The state's own projections indicate that by March 2026, the end of the financial year, only a fraction of the remaining Rs 65,000 crore will be raised.
In terms of specific departments, the report suggests a potential loss of Rs 9,000 crore in commercial tax collections alone, he pointed out.
He added, "Under the leadership of Siddaramaiah as both Chief Minister and Finance Minister, a revenue target of Rs 2.03 lakh crore was established. From March to December 2025, the government has reportedly raised only Rs 1.38 lakh crore."
The transport department indicated it may miss its revenue targets by 10 percent. The stamps and registration department has achieved just 65 percent of its target so far, he noted.
The only department confident about meeting its targets appears to be the excise department. Despite a decrease in beer consumption, the sale of hard liquor has reportedly increased, he observed.
"It is widely recognized that the five guarantees have depleted the state's finances. Even with these guarantees, the government's consistency in disbursal has been lacking," he criticized.
Another news report indicated that the government's overall governance progress (in terms of the utilization and disbursal of funds and grants) stands at only 51.6 percent. This performance is 6 percent lower than the same period last year, he stated.
This assessment was made during a meeting led by the state's chief secretary in December 2025, Siroya emphasized.
Recently, CM Siddaramaiah compared himself to former CM late Devaraj Urs for being the longest-serving chief minister. His supporters have also been vocally extolling his record as finance minister. Now it is evident that Siddaramaiah's records have not benefited the state's populace but only himself, Siroya criticized.
