New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) In a decisive move following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation, the Centre has approved the elevation of Justice Joymalya Bagchi to the Supreme Court.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news via a post on X, indicating that the President, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), has appointed Justice Bagchi, who currently serves as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, as a judge of the apex court.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” stated a notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

During a meeting on March 6, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Bagchi's name for the elevation to the apex court.

In their recommendation, the Collegium noted that the current Bench of the Supreme Court has representation from only one Judge from the Calcutta High Court, as mentioned in the statement released by the Collegium.

Justice Bagchi ranks 11th in the all-India seniority list of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices. He was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in June 2011 and was transferred to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on January 4, 2021. He returned to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he has been serving since. Justice Bagchi has been a Judge for over 13 years.

Following the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on May 25, 2031, Justice Bagchi is poised to take over as the Chief Justice of India until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

Justice Bagchi will enjoy a tenure of more than six years prior to his assumption of the Chief Justice role.

Since the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir on July 18, 2013, there has not been a Chief Justice of India from the Calcutta High Court.
