New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna officially administered the oath of office to Justice Joymalya Bagchi as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday. Last week, the Central Government approved the appointment of Justice Bagchi to the apex court after a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.
Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news on X, stating that the President, in consultation with the CJI, appointed Justice Bagchi, who previously served as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to the Supreme Court.
According to a notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."
The Supreme Court Collegium met on March 6 and recommended Justice Bagchi for elevation to the apex court. This recommendation took into account the current representation of the Supreme Court Bench, which includes only one Judge from the Calcutta High Court, as stated by the Collegium.
Justice Bagchi is ranked 11th in the combined seniority list of all High Court Judges in India, including Chief Justices.
First appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in June 2011, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, before returning to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he has been serving since.
With over 13 years of service as a High Court Judge, Justice Bagchi will be positioned to take over as Chief Justice of India following the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on May 25, 2031, until his own retirement on October 2, 2031.
Justice Bagchi is expected to have a tenure exceeding six years before he ascends to the Chief Justice position. Notably, since Justice Altamas Kabir's retirement as CJI on July 18, 2013, there has not been a Chief Justice from the Calcutta High Court.
