Justice Manmohan Sworn in as Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Manmohan on Thursday, marking his official role as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The appointment of Justice Manmohan was approved by the Centre on Tuesday, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.
Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced via a post on X that the President, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), was pleased to appoint Justice Manmohan, who previously served as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, to the Supreme Court.
Last week, the Supreme Court Collegium had put forth the name of Justice Manmohan for elevation to the apex court.
The Collegium's statement noted, "While recommending his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that, at present, the Bench of Supreme Court is represented by only one Judge from the High Court of Delhi."
Justice Manmohan has been a judge of the Delhi High Court since March 2008 and has held the position of Chief Justice since September 29. He ranks second in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court Judges and is the senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court.
Prior to his elevation, he specialized in practice areas including civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. He also acted as a Senior Panel Advocate for the Union government in both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium convened on November 28, 2024, to discuss the names of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts eligible for appointment to the Supreme Court. The Collegium unanimously recommended that Mr Justice Manmohan be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, according to their statement.
Born in Delhi on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan earned his B.A. (Hons.) in History from Hindu College, part of the University of Delhi, and attended the Campus Law Centre at Delhi University.
