New Delhi, January 13 (NationPress) In a decisive move following the recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium, the Centre has approved the elevation of Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, to the Supreme Court.
Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal revealed on X that the President, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), has officially appointed Justice Chandran as a Supreme Court judge.
According to a notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice of Patna High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India effective from the date he assumes office."
Just last week, the Supreme Court Collegium put forth Justice Chandran's name for elevation to the apex court.
"While recommending his name, the Collegium considered the absence of representation from the High Court of Kerala on the Supreme Court Bench," stated a release from the SC Collegium.
Justice Chandran began his judicial career as a judge of the Kerala High Court in November 2011 and became the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023.
"He has dedicated over 11 years as a Judge and more than a year as Chief Justice of a significant High Court. Throughout his extensive tenure, Justice Chandran has gained substantial expertise in various legal fields," the SC Collegium noted.
During its session, the Collegium discussed the eligibility of Chief Justices and senior puisne judges of High Courts for appointments to the Supreme Court.
Born on April 25, 1963, Justice Chandran ranks 13th in the all-India seniority list of High Court Judges. He earned his law degree from Kerala Law Academy Law College in Thiruvananthapuram and began his legal practice in 1991. Prior to his elevation, he served as Special Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Kerala government from 2007 to 2011.
