New Delhi, Dec 13 (NationPress) The Centre has officially announced the appointment of Justice Ashutosh Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court following the recent elevation of the current Chief Justice K. Vinod Chandran to the Supreme Court.

"In accordance with the authority granted by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is delighted to appoint Justice Ashutosh Kumar, a Judge of the Patna High Court, to carry out the responsibilities of the Chief Justice of that High Court starting from the moment Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran steps down from his position due to his promotion to the Supreme Court of India," stated a notification released by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

Article 223 enables the President to designate any puisne judge as the acting Chief Justice when "the position of Chief Justice of a High Court is unoccupied or when such Chief Justice is, due to absence or other reasons, unable to fulfill the duties of his office".

Earlier in the day, the Centre revealed the appointment of Justice Chandran to the apex court.

In a post on X, Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal mentioned that the President, after conferring with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), was pleased to appoint Justice Chandran, the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.

"Utilizing the powers vested by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India effective from the date he takes charge of his office," concluded the notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
