New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Thursday administered the oath of office to Justice K Vinod Chandran as a judge of the Supreme Court.
On Monday, the Central Government approved the appointment of Justice Chandran to the Apex Court based on a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal revealed that the President, following consultations with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), was delighted to appoint Justice K Vinod Chandran, who previously served as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as a Supreme Court judge.
Previously, the Supreme Court Collegium had put forth the name of Patna High Court Chief Justice Chandran for promotion to a judge of the Apex Court.
"While endorsing his name, the Collegium considered the absence of representation on the Supreme Court Bench from the High Court of Kerala," stated a release from the SC Collegium.
Justice Chandran was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court in November 2011 and advanced to Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023.
"He has served as a Judge of the High Court for over 11 years and as Chief Justice of a significant High Court for more than a year. Throughout his extensive tenure, Justice Chandran has gained substantial experience across various legal fields," added the SC Collegium.
In their meeting, the apex court Collegium reviewed the qualifications of Chief Justices and senior puisne judges of High Courts eligible for Supreme Court appointments.
Born on April 25, 1963, Justice Chandran ranks 13th in the combined seniority of High Court Judges across India.
He graduated with a law degree from Kerala Law Academy Law College in Thiruvananthapuram and began his legal practice in 1991.
Before his elevation, he was the Special Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Kerala government from 2007 to 2011.
