Supreme Court Collegium Proposes Transfers of Chief Justices from Bombay and Telangana High Courts

New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday suggested the transfer of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya from the Bombay High Court to the Delhi High Court.
Justice Upadhyaya, born on June 16, 1965, began his judicial career as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in November 2011, becoming a permanent judge in August 2013.
He assumed the office of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on July 29, 2023.
Previously, the Centre had announced the appointment of Justice Vibhu Bakhru as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, following the elevation of former Chief Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court.
The notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated, "In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Vibhu Bakhru, Judge of the Delhi High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court effective from the date Shri Justice Manmohan relinquishes charge of his office due to his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India."
Article 223 gives the President authority to appoint any puisne judge as acting Chief Justice when "the office of Chief Justice of a High Court is vacant or when any such Chief Justice is, by reason of absence or otherwise, unable to perform the duties of his office".
Additionally, on Tuesday, the SC Collegium also recommended that Chief Justice Alok Aradhe of the Telangana High Court be transferred to the Bombay High Court.
Justice Aradhe, born on April 13, 1964, became an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in December 2009 and took the oath as a permanent judge in February 2011. He was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on July 23, 2023.
