New Delhi/Mumbai, Sep 5 (NationPress) Justice Shree Chandrashekhar officially took the oath of office as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court during a concise swearing-in ceremony at Darbar Hall in Raj Bhavan. The oath was administered by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan.
Present at the ceremony was Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who congratulated Justice Chandrashekhar with a bouquet.
Also in attendance were Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar, Minister of Skill Development Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Minister of Protocol Jaykumar Rawal, judges from various High Courts, retired judges, and senior government officials.
The Central Government approved Justice Chandrashekhar's appointment as Chief Justice on Thursday, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.
A notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Judge of the Bombay High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court effective from the date he assumes charge of his office."
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Chandrashekhar for the position during its meeting on August 25. Following the elevation of then Chief Justice Alok Aradhe to the Supreme Court, Justice Chandrashekhar served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Born on May 25, 1965, Justice Chandrashekhar received his LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and joined the Delhi State Bar Council in 1993. He practiced law in Delhi for nearly 19 years, handling approximately 3,500 cases, primarily before the Supreme Court, and represented in about 140 reported judgments.
In January 2013, he became an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court, and in June 2014, he was appointed a permanent Judge. He later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on December 29, 2023, and was appointed as a Judge of the Bombay High Court on July 14, 2025.
