Bengaluru, Dec 5 (NationPress) In light of the controversy surrounding his assertion regarding '63 percent corruption,' which sparked a heated exchange between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the BJP, Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice B. Veerappa emphasized on Friday that his remarks were based on the India Corruption Survey 2019. He stated that Kerala ranked lowest in corruption, while Rajasthan topped the list, and clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and not directed at any specific government or state.
During a media interaction in Bengaluru, Justice Veerappa remarked, 'My statement regarding 63 percent corruption has been misconstrued. I made this statement at a book launch, addressing the widespread issue of corruption throughout the nation. My full speech was not taken into account, leading to a misrepresentation of my words.'
He elaborated, 'The statement was derived from a survey report, not a personal opinion. Kerala is at the bottom of the list, and Rajasthan is at the top. I have never criticized any government, and I want to make it clear that my comments were not against any specific administration. My remarks originate from the India Corruption Survey 2019 and reflect the survey's findings, not my personal viewpoint.'
Furthermore, he stated, 'I indicated that the four pillars of democracy are weakening. Nevertheless, the media and judiciary are stepping up to rectify these issues. While addressing the advocates, I highlighted that India is grappling with corruption, ranking 96th among 180 countries, with Karnataka positioned fifth.'
Justice Veerappa added, 'I did not target any government. I referred to terms like 'our state' and 'our nation'. Political leaders have taken offense due to their own agendas and are politicizing my statement. My goal was to motivate advocates, yet each political figure is exploiting the situation.'
In response to these developments, Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil remarked, 'The Upalokayukta referenced the August 2019 report. If the BJP retains R. Ashoka as the Leader of the Opposition, they will forever remain in the Opposition. Their ignorance and carelessness lead to such statements, and he has become a laughingstock. I recommend the BJP replace him as the Opposition Leader.'
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao also criticized BJP leaders, stating, 'R. Ashoka and State President B.Y. Vijayendra only deliver speeches. They lack information and speak without a foundation.'
