Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 18 (NationPress) Former BJP leader Pabitra Kar, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress, has been granted a party ticket to compete against the current Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, in the Nandigram Assembly elections.
In an interview with IANS, Kar stated his belief that the Trinamool Congress will secure victory in Nandigram by a margin of 30,000 votes. He expressed optimism, saying, “The outcomes in Nandigram will favor the Trinamool. I joined with a hopeful outlook today and am confident we will prevail by a 30,000 vote margin. I am grateful for receiving the party ticket on the same day I joined. On May 4, the day we count the votes, we will celebrate our electoral success with the color green,” Kar remarked.
Earlier that day, Kar officially joined the Trinamool Congress alongside the party’s All India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
The party noted that Kar was discontent with the BJP's direction in West Bengal, prompting his switch to the ruling party.
This development follows a day after the BJP declared that Suvendu Adhikari would run for the Assembly elections from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in Kolkata, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also a candidate for the BJP.
The Trinamool Congress announced Mamata Banerjee's candidacy for Bhabanipur, marking her second contest against Adhikari after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Adhikari previously won the Nandigram seat in 2021, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Mamata Banerjee. Subsequently, Banerjee retained her position as Chief Minister after winning a by-election in Bhabanipur.
To intensify competition against Adhikari, the Trinamool Congress has strategically placed Kar, a former BJP figure, in the Nandigram race.
