Nandigram Residents Predict Major BJP Victory, Trinamool Congress Set for Defeat in West Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nandigram, March 31 (NationPress) As the West Bengal Assembly elections draw near, local residents of Nandigram expressed their belief that the BJP is poised for a significant electoral victory, while the Trinamool Congress, facing allegations of corruption, will be decisively defeated.
IANS reached out to multiple residents in Nandigram to understand their views.
One local asserted, "This time, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to make a notable gain. The Trinamool Congress, under scrutiny for corruption, will be completely overwhelmed, and the BJP is anticipated to take power with a strong majority. The current government is imitating central government initiatives, like Ayushman Bharat, but that strategy won't hold for long. We are optimistic that the BJP will secure a win in the state this time."
Another resident commented, "Even though Mamata Banerjee is a woman, she has failed to contribute meaningfully to women’s issues. This administration has not succeeded in fostering development or improving children's education — no significant progress has been made."
The Election Commission has revealed the timetable for the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, which will unfold in two phases. The first phase of voting for 152 seats is scheduled for April 23, while the second phase for the remaining 142 seats will occur on April 29.
In addition to the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, Left parties and Congress are also participating in the elections, along with several smaller parties that hold sway in certain areas.
On Monday, the BJP showcased a united front as Suvendu Adhikari submitted his nomination for the upcoming elections. He was accompanied by former BJP state president Dilip Ghosh during his nomination filing in Nandigram.
For these crucial elections, the BJP has nominated Adhikari for two seats: one in Nandigram, where he triumphed over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2021, and the other in Bhawanipur, Banerjee's stronghold, where she has consistently won since taking office after the Left's ousting.
When Mamata Banerjee declared her candidacy for the 2021 Assembly elections from Nandigram, it was viewed variously as a masterstroke, a desperate move, and a strategic decision.
In her rallies, Mamata Banerjee has frequently claimed that the BJP is preventing people from consuming fish and meat in other states, warning that similar restrictions could be imposed in West Bengal if the BJP wins.
