On March 28 in Jammu, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced to the legislative assembly that the Jammu and Kashmir government is set to transform Karnah in the Kupwara district into a prominent border tourism hub, highlighting its vast possibilities for adventure and nature-based tourism.
In response to inquiries during the assembly session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized that Karnah is rich in opportunities for trekking, hiking, and eco-tourism activities, which can be leveraged to enhance both tourism and the local economy.
He elaborated that the government is focused on exploring the untapped potential of border regions like Karnah to encourage sustainable tourism and generate livelihood opportunities for the local populace.
The Chief Minister stated, "We still have significant work ahead in remote areas to enhance tourism. We may not have fully capitalized on our opportunities for tourism promotion yet."
The initiative for border tourism in Kashmir is gaining traction, opening previously restricted areas along the Line of Control (LoC), including Karnah, Gurez, Keran, Teetwal, and Uri, to tourists.
These locations are renowned for their stunning landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and breathtaking, high-altitude views, aimed at stimulating local economies and offering unique, offbeat adventures.
Noteworthy border tourism sites in J&K include Keran and Teetwal in Kupwara District, located along the Kishanganga River, which provide close-up views of the LoC, with neighboring Pakistani villages visible across the river.
Teetwal is distinguished by the Sharda Temple, a site of great religious importance for Hindus.
The Gurez Valley, previously an isolated area, is celebrated for its picturesque scenery, dramatic mountain vistas, and the towering Habba Khatoon peak.
Uri & Kaman Post, known as Kaman Aman Setu, is a popular destination in Uri where tourists can witness the historic cross-border route.
Machil is a scenic forested area that is favored by adventure and nature enthusiasts.
The Karnah Valley is home to the historical villages of Teetwal and Tangdhar.
