Srinagar, Oct 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday that the Gurez border region located in Bandipora district is becoming a noteworthy destination for travelers seeking unique experiences.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the Tourism Department has initiated various projects under the Capex Budget aimed at enhancing and promoting Gurez as a tourist hotspot.
Omar, who also oversees the Tourism portfolio, stated that for the financial year 2025-26, efforts are being made in collaboration with the District Administration of Bandipora to identify and allocate land for these developments.
Additionally, he highlighted that the Gurez Valley received the esteemed “Best Off-Beat Destination in India (Gold)” award in 2022, acknowledging its untouched natural landscapes, distinctive scenery, and commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
This recognition underscores Gurez Valley's vast tourism potential and its growing status as one of India’s top offbeat travel spots.
In response to a query from MLA Gurez regarding a specialized initiative for such emerging destinations, the Chief Minister assured that Gurez has been recognized by the Tourism Department as a promising offbeat location. He stated that once a dedicated scheme is initiated by the Government of India, Gurez will be recommended for further development under that scheme.
When asked by MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan about the availability of helicopter services for tourism, the Chief Minister clarified, “Currently, there are no helicopter services available for tourism; existing services cater primarily to local residents and patients, especially during the winter months when access is limited.”
He did, however, express openness to private sector involvement in tourism-related aviation services.
“Should any private entity wish to establish helicopter services for tourists in Gurez, we will provide our full support. Although no proposals are currently under review, we are willing to consider any that may arise,” he added.
Regarding the potential for a Light and Sound Show in Gurez, the Chief Minister indicated that the concept is under consideration.
“Hosting it on Habba Khatoon Mountain has been proposed. We will evaluate the technical and logistical feasibility, and if viable, we can proceed with it,” he remarked.
