Is the Drug Menace Out of Control in Karnataka?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 24 (NationPress) The BJP in Karnataka criticized the Congress government on Wednesday, stating that the drug menace has escalated significantly within the state, highlighting a failure to combat organized crime and maintain law and order.
During a press briefing, R. Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition, asserted that drug cartels are freely operating in Karnataka, prompting law enforcement from other states to intervene and make arrests.
“Every time I raise concerns regarding drugs, the Home Minister diverts attention to incidents occurring in other parts of the country. The police department is reportedly entangled in a transfer racket,” he claimed.
Ashoka noted that criminal activities have surged since Congress assumed power, accusing the government of misusing laws intended to combat hate speech.
“A law has been implemented in the guise of curbing hate speech that infringes on the freedom of expression. Congress previously imposed an Emergency, and this law is now being used to imprison opposition leaders and target the media,” he remarked.
Stating the BJP's intent to resist this legislation, Ashoka mentioned that the party plans to urge the Governor to withhold assent to the Bill once it reaches his desk.
He also criticized the government's approach to wildlife conservation, alleging that over 206 elephants have perished under the Congress regime. Ashoka stated that 61 leopards, 19 peacocks, and numerous deer in the Forest Department's care have also died, claiming that illegal wildlife trade is thriving.
“Instead of tackling these serious issues, the government has chosen to cancel safaris. No other state has taken such drastic measures. Wildlife conflicts aren’t caused by safaris. Approximately 6,000 individuals employed in jungle resorts face hardships, tourism is in decline, and farmers and local communities are experiencing losses,” Ashoka commented.
In reference to the recent Assembly session, Ashoka remarked that while discussions about North Karnataka were held, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made no new commitments for the region. He accused the government of delaying funds under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, impacting 1.26 crore women.
“The government has yet to clarify the reasons behind the payment delays for February and March. This is a significant scam. We will continue our protests until the women receive their dues,” he asserted, also alleging that opportunities to discuss issues like the misuse of Dalit funds, ration card cancellations, and human-wildlife conflict were stifled.
Ashoka further contended that the Congress party is plagued by internal discord, claiming confusion over leadership roles in the state. “Even Congress members have openly acknowledged failures within the administration. This infighting has hindered development efforts,” he claimed.
He accused the state government of inadequate coordination with the Center, asserting that central initiatives are not being effectively implemented and that funds are being withheld due to procedural mistakes.
“They haven’t even dispatched a delegation to the central government. They merely issue statements,” he emphasized.
Highlighting the recent town panchayat elections, Ashoka stated that the BJP’s performance reflects public dissatisfaction with what he termed Congress’s misrule.
