Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauded Olympic silver medallist and Commonwealth Games boxer Lovlina Borgohain for confronting a Glasgow restaurant over a distorted map of India that omitted the Northeast — calling her gesture one that 'will be remembered for a very long time.' The Incident at the Glasgow Restaurant

Following a celebratory dinner with the Indian boxing team after the Games, Lovlina noticed that the map of India printed on the restaurant's menu was missing the Northeast region entirely. Despite the festive atmosphere, she calmly raised the issue with the restaurant management.

'Please don't take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our Northeast is missing. Yes, even outside, the map that's displayed has cut off the Northeast. As someone from the Northeast, that really hurts us. That's all I wanted to say. Please keep this in mind next time. Thank you so much,' she told the restaurant staff.

The restaurant subsequently corrected the map after Lovlina drew their attention to the error.

PM Modi's Reaction at the Champions' Meeting

At a special meeting with India's Commonwealth Games champions at his residence following their return from Scotland, Modi brought up the episode with a characteristic lightness, asking Lovlina: 'Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi? (What happened, you were fighting with that restaurant guy?)'

Lovlina, who hails from Assam, laughed and clarified that she had raised the point politely, even though the team was in a celebratory mood. 'It was a happy occasion sir, we were celebrating and I didn't like to see the distorted flag. I politely told them and they have made the changes also,' she replied.

Modi then praised the Assam boxer for her alertness and the broader significance of her action. 'To be able to recognise the significance of that map at a time when you were celebrating, and the Games were over, I can tell you truthfully that video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time,' he said.
