Following a landmark performance by India's boxing team — which returned with 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver — members of the squad gathered at a local restaurant for a celebratory dinner. It was during this occasion that Lovlina Borgohain, who had won the silver medal in the women's 75kg category, noticed that the map of India printed on the restaurant's menu was missing the entire Northeast region.

Borgohain, who hails from Assam in the Northeast, raised the matter directly with the restaurant's staff. 'Please don't take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our Northeast is missing. As someone from the Northeast, that really hurts us. Please keep this in mind next time. Thank you so much,' she told the restaurant staff. The management subsequently corrected the map.

Modi's Reaction at the Champions' Meeting

At a post-Games meeting with India's Commonwealth champions in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi specifically brought up the episode. He asked Borgohain with a light touch, 'Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi? (What happened, you were fighting with that restaurant guy?)'

Borgohain laughed and clarified that the team had been in a celebratory mood but that she had still felt compelled to raise the issue politely. 'It was a happy occasion sir, we were celebrating and I didn't like to see the distorted flag. I politely told them and they have made the changes also,' she said.

Modi then praised her for the presence of mind to notice the cartographic error even amid the celebrations. 'To be able to recognise the significance of that map at a time when you were celebrating, and the Games were over, I can tell you truthfully that video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time,' the Prime Minister said.
