Karnataka: Four Students on Educational Excursion Drown; Government Announces ₹5 Lakh Aid

Karwar (Karnataka), Dec 11 (NationPress) A deeply distressing event has unfolded in the coastal town of Murudeshwar, situated in Karwar district, Karnataka, where four female students tragically drowned while on an educational trip. The state government has declared a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of each of the deceased girls as of Wednesday.
The girls were caught by powerful currents while they were enjoying themselves at Murudeshwar beach on Tuesday evening. Initially, authorities were able to rescue four girls, and a search operation is currently ongoing for the others. The girls who lost their lives have been identified as 15-year-old Deeksha, Lavanya, Vandana, and Shravanthi.
On Wednesday morning, the bodies of Deeksha, Lavanya, and Vandana were recovered. Shravanthi was saved immediately after the incident on Tuesday but unfortunately later passed away due to her injuries. Two other students were successfully rescued by the authorities, and rescue operations are still in progress to find the remaining students.
These students were part of Morarji Desai Residential School located in Kottur village near Mulbagal town in Kolar district. A total of 57 individuals, including teachers, were part of this academic trip. The strong ocean currents swept the girls away while they were playing at Murudeshwar beach.
There are allegations that negligence on the part of both the teachers and the tourism department contributed to this unfortunate incident.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his shock over the tragedy and announced the compensation while extending his condolences to the bereaved families.
Siddaramaiah remarked, “I was deeply shocked to learn about the students from the Morarji Desai Residential School in Mulbagal Taluk, Kolar District, who tragically drowned in the sea near Murudeshwar during an educational trip. I pray for peace for the souls who have departed and offer my heartfelt condolences to their grieving parents.”
“The state government will provide ₹5 lakh each to the families of the four students who perished in this tragic incident. I have instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district to ensure arrangements are made for transporting the bodies back to their hometowns,” Siddaramaiah added.
The Chief Minister further emphasized, “Teachers must exercise heightened vigilance when supervising children during outings. Extra precautions should be taken in monitoring children when visiting hazardous locations. I understand the sorrow and anguish of parents who have lost their children. I hope that such tragedies do not occur again.”
