On the same day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences regarding the loss of the students in the river.

“CM Mohan Charan Majhi has conveyed his heartfelt sorrow over the unfortunate drowning of two students during the immersion of the Saraswati idol in the Kuakhai River, located near Rangabazar in the Balianta block. He has extended his sympathies to the grieving families. The state government has sanctioned Rs 4 lakh as ex-gratia assistance for each family from the State Disaster Response Fund,” stated the Chief Minister's Office on X.

The victims were identified as Dibyajyoti Mahalik and Sikun Senapati, both hailing from the Unit-6 area within Bhubaneswar's police jurisdiction.

Both students were 15 years old and were in class 10.

Reports indicate that the two minors, accompanied by their teacher and fellow students, had gone to the Rangabazar locality for the immersion of the Saraswati idol.

While the rest stayed on the riverbank, Dibyajyoti and Sikun entered the water to immerse the idol but unfortunately lost their footing and fell into the deep waters.

Despite their attempts to get back to safety, they were unable to resurface.

In desperation, their tuition teacher contacted the police and Fire Service for assistance.

Fire service personnel later retrieved the minors from the river and rushed them to Capital Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

The Balianta Police have initiated an investigation into the incident by filing a case of unnatural death.
