Bhubaneswar, Aug 11 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Majhi, has declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakhs for each family member of the mother-daughter pair who tragically lost their lives in a hit-and-run accident in Patrapada, Bhubaneswar, on August 9.
The compensation will be sourced from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The victims have been identified as Rebati Raul and her eight-year-old daughter Jagruti Raul, both hailing from the Jankia region of Khordha district.
CM Majhi expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family due to the tragic incident. Reports indicate that Rebati, accompanied by her son and daughter Jagruti, was returning from her brother's residence after celebrating Rakhi Purnima when they were struck by a speeding Thar vehicle in Patrapada on Saturday afternoon.
While Jagruti died instantly, Rebati succumbed to her injuries during treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, on Monday. Eyewitnesses claimed the driver of the Thar was engaged in a racing competition with another vehicle, a black Scorpio, at the time of the incident.
In response, locals organized protests, blocking roads in Patrapada on both Sunday and Monday, demanding accountability for the reckless driving. Currently, the police have not apprehended the driver, who remains unidentified and at large. However, authorities have confiscated the Thar vehicle involved in the incident.
Senior police officials assured the distressed locals that the driver has been identified and efforts are underway to arrest him soon.
In a separate incident, CM Mohan Majhi expressed his condolences regarding the untimely death of Dipu Yadav, a student from Budharaja Upper Primary School in Sambalpur district, who tragically passed away on Monday. The Chief Minister also announced Rs 4 lakh in financial aid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the family of the deceased student.
