Bengaluru, June 7 (NationPress) Following the Supreme Court's decision to revoke his bail in the 2016 murder case of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda, Karnataka Congress MLA and Chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSB), Vinay Kulkarni, expressed on Saturday his intention to comply with the apex court's directive to surrender.
The Supreme Court annulled MLA Kulkarni's bail on Friday, citing allegations of witness tampering.
Addressing the media regarding the situation, Kulkarni remarked: "I have met Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and informed him about the developments from yesterday. We cannot discuss the court's decision. We must respect it, and I will follow the order."
When questioned about the potential implications for him, he replied: "There are several individuals involved... I cannot claim that is the issue. The court will evaluate the evidence and render its judgment accordingly."
Regarding possible future legal actions, he said: "We will see, there is a timeframe of 10 to 15 days. There is a higher power. Everyone knows... people wish to see me imprisoned."
On the involvement of notable figures in northern Karnataka, he noted: "Many exist."
The Supreme Court's decision to rescind MLA Kulkarni's bail followed a petition from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which accused him of attempting to influence witnesses and offering them money. The court instructed him to surrender within a week.
Sources indicate that the state Congress unit is concerned about this situation.
In light of these events, MLA Kulkarni was summoned by Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President Shivakumar to his residence for discussions. They have also consulted a prominent Supreme Court attorney and senior Congress figure regarding the matter.
Zilla Panchayat Member Yogesh Gowda was murdered at his gym on June 15, 2016. At that time, Vinay Kulkarni was a cabinet minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Allegations suggested that Yogesh Gowda was murdered to stifle his political ascent and the BJP's influence in the area.
Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa declared during his campaign that he would send Vinay Kulkarni to prison in connection with the case. Upon taking office, he transferred the case to the CBI. Kulkarni was apprehended by CBI agents on November 5, 2020.
After spending nine months in custody, Kulkarni was released on August 13, 2021. The Supreme Court imposed a condition prohibiting him from entering Dharwad district. Nonetheless, he won the Dharwad seat in the 2023 assembly elections without entering his constituency, thanks to his wife and daughter’s campaign efforts.
The Supreme Court has mandated an expedited investigation and a thorough witness examination in the case. The CBI, which has been closely monitoring the witnesses, reportedly discovered attempts to bribe them and submitted evidence to the court in this regard.
