Bengaluru, Jan 27 (NationPress) In a troubling revelation, JD(S) MLA Karemma G. Nayak, who represents the Devadurga constituency, expressed her fears during a session in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly that she has been followed and threatened by members of the sand mafia.

During the Question Hour on Tuesday, she raised concerns regarding the deteriorating law-and-order conditions in her area. “In broad daylight, a dialysis machine was taken from a hospital, and its whereabouts remain unknown. I am fighting against illegal activities in my constituency, but it is becoming more challenging by the day. The Home Minister's written response is based solely on police information and is inadequate,” she stated.

She pointed out that the sand mafia operations are flourishing along the Krishna river, with illegal transportation of sand happening without fear, creating a climate of intimidation. “Women are hesitant to even step outside their homes for basic needs. Attempts to reach authorities often go unanswered. The Home Minister claims a special team has been formed, yet they merely seem to be taking photographs. Furthermore, the check posts lack CCTV cameras,” she alleged.

“When I venture out to engage with constituents and address their issues, I am followed by numerous vehicles. When I confront them, they threaten me, insisting they are 'protecting' me. As a female MLA, if I am facing such intimidation, what is the government doing?” she questioned.

She also mentioned that although loose sand is necessary, the tendering process has not been finalized, indicating a possible collusion among officials. “There are powerful individuals behind this. Money is being siphoned off while the government gains nothing. Roads have been ruined, leading to accidents, including a bus overturning, resulting in the conductor's death and injuries to children,” she noted.

“I urge for immediate action. The Home Minister's response is not satisfactory. I have personally visited his residence pleading for action. Instead, groups have come to my home to argue and blame me for various issues. What is my recourse?” she inquired.

The JD(S) floor leader, C.B. Suresh Babu, remarked that even elected officials lack protection, raising concerns about the safety of ordinary citizens. “The loose sand mafia is operating with impunity. Groups are causing disturbances outside her residence. If a female lawmaker is subjected to such conditions, it is extremely concerning,” he stated.

In response to the accusations, Home Minister G. Parameshwara assured MLA Karemma that she would not face harassment and emphasized that the police would guarantee her safety. He assured all legislators that protection would be provided and that any lapses would be addressed.

He explained that the sand mafia issue is not limited to the Devadurga area. “This problem is prevalent throughout the taluk. Measures are being taken. The Mines and Geology Department is handling the matter under the MMDR Act. A team comprising the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, and police officials is in place. Once complaints are made, police action will follow,” he stated.

“In the Devadurga area alone, illegal sand mining is widespread, with 440 cases registered to date. Additionally, 34 cases related to matka gambling have been filed. It’s inaccurate to say the police are inactive. Task forces have been established, banks are being monitored for financial transactions, and a dedicated Sand Task Force has been created. I will ensure they function effectively,” he added.

“In Raichur district, several individuals have been externed. In 2023, 19 proposals were made, resulting in eight externments. In 2024, 13 individuals were externed, and this year, eight more have been externed. This issue cannot be resolved overnight. We will not compromise, and actions will persist,” he assured.

Senior JD(S) MLA G.T. Deve Gowda stated, “She has been consistently targeted, and this matter requires serious attention.”

MLA Karemma also pointed out that trucks are operating without proper registration. “The tender process needs to be initiated. This matter must be taken seriously,” she insisted.

“I will personally look into this issue and take the necessary actions,” Parameshwara stated.

Senior BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar questioned the government, asking why illegal activities were flourishing in Raichur despite the presence of an SP and IGP, and why a special operation could not be initiated to rectify the situation.

In response, Parameshwara remarked, “Suresh Kumar is a senior leader. I have not revealed details about the influential figures involved in Raichur or who is backing these activities. This is a significant issue involving high-profile individuals across all political parties. I have provided a limited response because it is a sensitive situation.”

Suresh Kumar countered that no one is above the law and that the government exists for the common populace, not for the protection of the powerful.

Parameshwara assured the assembly that he would arrange a meeting with local MLAs to take appropriate action.
