  • Karnataka government issues notices to teachers for RSS participation.
  • Teachers must explain their involvement in foot marches.
  • Failure to comply may lead to disciplinary action.
  • High Court temporarily stays government order affecting public activities.
  • KAT suspends action against a Panchayat Development Officer.

Bengaluru, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Congress-led administration in Karnataka has ramped up its scrutiny of government employees for their association with the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and involvement in foot marches throughout the state.

Recently, it was revealed that four teachers from Aurad taluk in Bidar district received notices from authorities for participating in an RSS foot march.

The notice was issued by the Aurad Block Education Officer (BEO) requiring them to justify their involvement.

The RSS march occurred in Aurad on October 7 and 13.

Teachers named Mahadev, Shalivan, Prakash, and Satish were noted as participants.

On October 27, leaders from Dalit Sena submitted a complaint to the BEO, urging action against the teachers.

In response, the BEO issued show cause notices to the four educators the following day.

The notice stated: "Evidence indicates your participation in the RSS foot march held in Aurad taluk of Bidar district on October 7 and 13. Videos and photographs documenting your participation have circulated widely on social media. As government employees, you are prohibited from engaging in political or religious activities. Your involvement in the RSS foot march constitutes a breach of government service regulations."

"Therefore, upon receiving this notice, you are required to submit a written explanation and personally appear at this office. Failure to comply will result in unilateral action under the Karnataka Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules, 1957," it further added.

In light of this, state authorities have begun issuing notices to government personnel for their perceived affiliation with the RSS following a letter from Minister Priyank Kharge advocating a ban on RSS activities in public areas.

Minister Kharge also called for the state government to take action against employees who identify as supporters or make donations to the RSS.

As a consequence of the government's stance, an order has been enacted requiring all private organizations to seek permission from authorities prior to conducting activities in public spaces and government properties.

However, the Congress-led government faced a setback when the Kalaburagi bench of the High Court temporarily stayed this order.

The government has announced plans to appeal this ruling.

On Thursday, the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) suspended the Congress-led government's decision to suspend a Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) for joining an RSS foot march.

The KAT issued a stay on the suspension order of PDO Praveen Kumar, who had been suspended for participating in the RSS march in Lingasagur of Raichur district.

The PDO challenged his suspension in the KAT, asserting that it contravened legal standards and was influenced by political pressure.

Point of View

I observe this situation with a critical lens. The government's crackdown on teachers involved with the RSS raises important questions about the balance of political neutrality and individual rights in public service. While adherence to government regulations is crucial, it is equally vital to reflect on the implications for freedom of expression among educators.
