Bengaluru, April 3 (NationPress) A resolution to form a Gig Workers Welfare Board in Karnataka was reached during a meeting held by Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, alongside Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in New Delhi on Thursday.

The Chief Minister’s Office announced that the state government has been actively pursuing measures to enhance the welfare of gig workers engaged with companies like Amazon, Flipkart, and various other platforms.

“During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi voiced his support for the well-being of gig workers. In the recent meeting at his residence, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Labour Minister Santosh Lad, Minister for RDPR, IT and BT Priyank Kharge, and Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil, engaged in a detailed discussion on the subject,” the office mentioned.

The meeting proved fruitful, culminating in the decision to set up the Gig Workers' Welfare Board.

“It was also agreed that a 5 percent cess would be levied on relevant companies, with the remaining necessary funds being allocated by the government to establish schemes and conduct programs for the welfare of gig workers,” it further stated.

The Chief Minister’s Office reported that, during the meeting chaired by Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and three ministers focused on the welfare of gig workers, representatives from the gig workers’ community were also invited to participate.

Rakshitha Dev from Karnataka, Sheikh Salahuddin from Hyderabad, and Nikhil Dev joined the meeting as gig workers’ representatives. Rahul Gandhi commended all eight primary proposals prepared by the Labour Department.

Moving forward, a comprehensive bill that encompasses all necessary components will be submitted to the state cabinet for approval.

The Chief Minister’s Office mentioned that the Labour Department has already introduced three pivotal bills, including the Gratuity Bill for Workers and the Cinema Workers' Bill.

“With plans to pass legislation for the welfare of gig workers, the unorganised labour sector in the state has expressed immense gratitude and congratulated the government for its proactive approach and initiative,” it concluded.
