Bhubaneswar, Aug 6 (NationPress) The tragic demise of yet another female student following a self-immolation attempt in the Pattamundai region of Odisha's Kendrapara district on Wednesday has led to a surge in criticism from opposition parties directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state administration.
During a press conference, senior leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Lenin Mohanty, expressed, "This incident is not only shocking but also deeply frustrating for the citizens of Odisha. There is rampant lawlessness. Lawyers face assaults, businessmen struggle to operate, and both teachers and youth feel insecure. In the last fortnight alone, three invaluable lives have been lost due to administrative negligence."
Mohanty called for accountability, urging Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to relinquish the Home Department responsibilities and appoint someone more qualified.
"The Chief Minister has lost the necessary trust to manage the Home Department. The Director General of Police must also resign immediately, as it is his duty to uphold law and order and safeguard the populace. On this front, he has failed," Mohanty asserted.
Likewise, the Opposition Congress ramped up its criticism of the state government following the tragic incident involving the girl student in Pattamundai, Kendrapara district.
The Congress party claimed that this incident has disturbed the conscience of the people of Odisha, highlighting the pervasive state of lawlessness and administrative negligence.
The party alleged that the victim resorted to this extreme action because police ignored her complaints regarding harassment from her estranged boyfriend.
The Congress called for an immediate high-level inquiry into the incident, demanding the suspension of any police officials found culpable.
Following the directive from Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das, a fact-finding committee has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic occurrence.
This committee plans to visit the site on Thursday and will submit a comprehensive report on the matter.
Notably, another girl student also died on Wednesday after allegedly setting herself ablaze due to blackmail from her boyfriend in Kathiapada village under the Pattamundai Rural police station area of Kendrapara district.
The victim was in her final year of undergraduate studies at a local college.
