Kerala Businessman’s Wife Calls for Abetment Charges Against CPI(M)-Linked Bank Officials Following Husband’s Suicide

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 22 (NationPress) Marykutty, the spouse of Mulangassery Sabu (56), a trader from Kattapana in the Idukki district of Kerala, who took his own life on December 20, is now seeking abetment charges against the officials of a CPI(M)-controlled cooperative bank.
During a press conference held on Sunday, Marykutty expressed her unwavering confidence in the Kerala Police investigation regarding her husband’s suspected suicide.
Sabu, who owned a clothing store, was discovered deceased at the Kattapana Rural Development Co-operative Society on Friday morning.
A suicide note found on Sabu’s body claimed that bank officials had mistreated him and hindered his efforts to withdraw funds from his deposits, ultimately leading him to this tragic decision.
Marykutty indicated that the bank had continually delayed their withdrawal requests for the past year and a half, leaving them in limbo each time, except for one instance.
She accused a bank employee, known as Binoy, of verbally assaulting Sabu and alleged that the bank intentionally withheld funds despite Sabu’s numerous requests.
The family intends to submit Sabu’s phone to the investigators, as it allegedly contains recordings of verbal harassment from bank officials. “The bank has tormented us for over a year and a half. The responsible individuals must face prosecution,” Marykutty asserted.
She further disclosed that Sabu had been attempting to withdraw money from his account to cover her medical expenses.
Marykutty underwent a hysterectomy recently, and Sabu was in need of funds to pay for the hospital bills.
Despite having Rs 14 lakh in his account, the bank reportedly denied access to the funds, citing insufficient reserves due to prior loan distributions.
Marykutty mentioned that Sabu felt desperate and trapped, having confided in her before taking this extreme action.
Sabu’s funeral took place on Saturday after an autopsy at Idukki Government Medical College Hospital.
The Kattapana Rural Co-operative Bank is under the control of the CPI(M).
Local media have reported a threatening phone call allegedly made by a CPI(M) Idukki district committee member and director of the bank to Sabu. However, CPI(M) district secretary Vargheese, while speaking to the media, seemed to defend the director.
