Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 4 (NationPress) - The only Scheduled Tribe gram panchayat in Kerala, Edamalakudi, one of the most challenging and remote areas in the state, is preparing for an election that highlights its unique obstacles, including rugged terrain and a diverse demographic.
This isolated forest panchayat, situated in Idukki district, will see participation from 1,803 voters and 41 candidates.
Due to delimitation and the addition of the Kavakkattukudi ward, Edamalakudi is now structured into 14 wards, all reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates.
The voter roster features a near-equal distribution of gender, comprising 893 women and 910 men.
The candidate lineup reflects this gender balance as well, with 20 women and 21 men competing.
This election marks a significant increase in women's representation, with seven wards -- Meenkuthikudi, Nooradaikudi, Parappayarkudi, Thekke Idaliparakudi, Societykudi, Ambalappadikudi, and Kavakkattukudi -- designated specifically for female candidates, emphasizing the importance of gender balance in governance.
However, conducting elections in this region presents remarkable logistical challenges.
With no accessible roads and dense forests between settlements, polling officials must traverse several kilometers, carrying election materials to reach each of the 14 polling booths.
Adverse weather and difficult geographical conditions further complicate the process.
To facilitate seamless coordination, seven sectoral assistants have been appointed to oversee election activities throughout the panchayat.
Temporary fencing will be erected around polling stations to ensure safe and orderly voting.
Moreover, the Forest Department's Rapid Response Team (RRT) will be on hand to provide essential security for voters and polling personnel, given the area's wildlife presence.
Established as a separate panchayat in 2010, Edamalakudi was carved out from a ward of the Munnar gram panchayat.
Fifteen years later, each election continues to underscore the formidable challenges of bringing democratic processes to one of Kerala's most remote and demanding regions.
Munnar, famed for its vast tea plantations, pleasant climate, and rich biodiversity, is located in Idukki district. The area attracts tourists year-round while also supporting a significant local population engaged in plantation work and service industries.
Administratively, Munnar falls under the purview of the Munnar gram panchayat, which manages civic amenities, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives across a varied geographical landscape.
This panchayat plays a vital role in coordinating services for both residents and the large transient tourist population, whose presence complicates governance and the provision of public services, especially during peak tourist seasons.
