New Delhi, June 25 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge aimed a subtle jab at senior party member Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday, asserting that the Thiruvananthapuram MP secured his position in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) due to his proficiency in the English language.
In light of the uproar over Tharoor's commendation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge stated during a press conference: “I don’t read English, but his (Tharoor’s) English is very good. That’s why we made him a member of the Working Committee.”
This statement followed Tharoor's recent article where he characterized Modi’s “energy, dynamism and willingness to engage” as a “prime asset” for India on the international platform, remarks that have faced backlash within Congress.
Kharge, while taking a dig at Tharoor, remarked: “The entire Opposition stated that the nation stands with the Indian Army. I was the first to raise my voice emphasizing that the nation takes precedence. Yet, some argue that Modi is prioritized over the nation. How do we address that?” he questioned.
Last week, Tharoor addressed his followers in Thiruvananthapuram, acknowledging his disagreements with the party hierarchy. “Yes, I have differing views with the Congress leadership -- that is known. Some matters are public knowledge. I will communicate directly with the leadership if necessary. But I am not leaving,” he stated.
Tharoor recently spearheaded a multi-party delegation to various nations to counter Pakistan’s narrative on cross-border terrorism, following a deadly attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities.
During the press conference at Indira Bhavan, Kharge launched a fierce critique against the BJP and Modi, accusing them of exploiting the 50th anniversary of the Emergency to distract from their shortcomings and undermine the Indian Constitution.
“PM Modi continuously references a period that the nation has moved beyond. He is dwelling on an issue that people have already forgotten,” he asserted.
Kharge further criticized the BJP’s ideological roots, alleging that members associated with the RSS once burned images of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan and even called for elements of the Manusmriti to be integrated into the Constitution.
