Did Suvendu Adhikari Demand an Impartial Probe into the Messi Event Chaos in Kolkata?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Sunday called for an impartial investigation into the turmoil that unfolded during Argentine football legend Lionel Messi's event at the Yuva Bharati (Salt Lake) Stadium. He drew attention to similarities between the handling of this situation and the investigation of the RG Kar rape and murder case.
The BJP leader expressed his rejection of the inquiry committee established by the state government, insisting instead on the creation of an independent body to investigate the incident thoroughly.
During a press briefing, Adhikari presented various photographs and video footage related to the chaos at the stadium, raising numerous questions about the investigation's progress. He pointed out what he called significant discrepancies in the First Information Report (FIR) that was filed concerning the incident.
Adhikari argued that the FIR had undermined the case, making comparisons to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident. He claimed that just as former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel and former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh had “compromised” the earlier case, the ongoing inquiry was also flawed from the start.
"In the RG Kar case, Sanjoy Roy was arrested, and now Satadru Datta has been detained. In both situations, one individual is being depicted as the sole offender," Adhikari stated, referencing the arrest of the event's organizer, Satadru Datta.
He read excerpts from the FIR, noting it was lodged by Dipankar, the Inspector-in-Charge of Bidhannagar Police, who oversaw entry gates 7 and 12 at the stadium.
"This case lacks substance. The organizer and CRPF security personnel are being blamed. Satadru was arrested at 2:49 p.m., yet the FIR was filed at 6:35 p.m.," he questioned the timeline of events.
It's important to note that the state government has already set up a high-level inquiry committee led by a retired judge to look into the incident. However, Adhikari dismissed the panel, insisting: "The investigation must not involve local agencies. An impartial inquiry should be conducted by excluding Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police, and State Police, and appointing a judge instead."
The chaos erupted at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday when spectators engaged in vandalism after they were unable to catch a glimpse of Messi, citing severe mismanagement by the organizers and restricted views due to VIP arrangements. Several fans, who reported paying high prices for tickets, expressed their frustration when they could not see their beloved football star even after entering the stadium.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to damage in parts of the Yuva Bharati Stadium amidst the crowd's anger. Subsequently, police arrested the main organizer of the event, Satadru Datta.
In response to the uproar, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the establishment of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the failures that contributed to the chaos.
