Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) In a significant development, the police have detained five additional individuals linked to the violent altercation between the supporters of the BJP and Trinamool Congress in Kolkata's Girish Park, as confirmed on Sunday.

A senior official from the Kolkata Police stated that the arrests were executed following complaints lodged by both political factions on Saturday night. Notably, the Kolkata Police took the initiative to file a suo motu case concerning the incident.

In related health updates, six police officers have been released from medical care, while two others continue to receive treatment.

The Election Commission is demanding a comprehensive report from Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar regarding the incident. Additionally, a report concerning the attack on State Minister Shashi Panja's residence following the clashes has also been requested.

Furthermore, the Commission is seeking clarification on why central paramilitary forces, already stationed in the state for the imminent Assembly elections, were not deployed to manage the situation.

Prior to PM Modi's rally on Saturday, stones were reportedly thrown at the residence of State Minister Shashi Panja in Girish Park. Trinamool Congress members accused BJP activists of instigating the violence while heading to the Prime Minister's rally at Brigade Parade Ground. Minister Panja alleged she was personally assaulted during the chaos, while the BJP countered, asserting that their supporters were targeted by Trinamool workers who threw bricks as they marched through Girish Park.

The Girish Park area rapidly escalated into a conflict zone due to this incident. Following the outbreak of violence, law enforcement from the Bowbazar Police Station was dispatched, alongside the Rapid Action Force (RAF). During efforts to restore order, the Officer-in-Charge of Bowbazar Police Station was injured by bricks thrown during the commotion, alongside other officers.

On Saturday night, police arrested four individuals linked to the disturbances after conducting extensive operations. The West Bengal unit of the BJP has accused authorities of bias, claiming that their supporters were unfairly targeted and that tensions were incited by ruling party activists who attacked a bus transporting supporters to PM Modi’s rally.

The police initiated an investigation after registering an FIR and apprehending four individuals, three of whom are confirmed BJP supporters: Krishanu Bose, Sunny Dey, and Charanjit Singh.

BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh asserted that none of the three arrested BJP supporters were near the conflict zones when violence erupted. He challenged the Kolkata Police to release CCTV footage and mobile tower locations from the time of the incident, alleging that the arrests were politically motivated at the behest of the Trinamool Congress.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee condemned the events surrounding Minister Dr. Sashi Panja, stating that the attack was not only an affront to a woman minister but to all women in the state. He criticized the BJP's tactics, claiming they aim to import a culture of provocation into West Bengal, threatening its peace and instilling fear. “Such actions will not be forgiven or forgotten. West Bengal will not endure BJP's saffron hooliganism,” Banerjee asserted.
