Trinamool Congress Leaders Condemn PM Modi's Comments at Kolkata Rally
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 14 (NationPress) Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, prominent leaders from the Trinamool Congress, including state ministers Bratya Basu, Shashi Panja, and party MP Saayoni Ghosh, convened an urgent press conference at Trinamool Bhavan on Sunday. They accused the BJP of engaging in acts of vandalism and violence.
During the press briefing, state Education Minister Bratya Basu vehemently criticized the Prime Minister, remarking: "The tone adopted by the Prime Minister at the Brigade today echoes right here in Girish Park. The way in which BJP workers allegedly perpetrated vandalism at Minister Shashi Panja’s home is without precedent. Was this attack motivated and incited by the Prime Minister’s rhetoric?"
He added, “We have not witnessed such a precedent in any state where a sitting minister’s residence is attacked with stones, bottles, and shards of glass. While Mamata Banerjee promotes a message of a peaceful and secular Bengal, the BJP resorts to such tactics just before the elections.”
Prior to PM Modi's rally, stones were reportedly thrown at state minister Shashi Panja's residence in the north Kolkata Girish Park area. Trinamool supporters alleged that BJP activists executed this act while en route to the Prime Minister’s rally. The state minister claimed she suffered injuries during the incident.
In response, the BJP countered these allegations, asserting that Trinamool members had thrown bricks at their activists as they marched through Girish Park.
Shashi Panja, present at the scene, recounted her experience.
She stated: "Today, as BJP workers made their way to the Brigade rally, they allegedly caused chaos right outside my home. While our team was erecting flex banners, a group wearing BJP caps—traveling in a bus—turned aggressive while chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.”
Discussing her injuries, Shashi Panja remarked: "Whether I am a minister or just a woman is irrelevant. A brick was thrown directly at me, hitting my abdomen. I have been injured at the site of a previous surgery. Such behavior is unacceptable in democratic politics."
In light of these events, Shashi Panja also scrutinized the Prime Minister’s comments made during the rally.
Addressing the Prime Minister's warning to "settle scores," she questioned: "Is attacking a state minister an example of that 'settling of scores'? Are you the Prime Minister solely for the BJP, or for the entire nation?"
Reports indicate that three Trinamool workers—identified as Shubham, Souvik, and Krishna—sustained serious injuries during the altercation, with injuries reported to their chests and heads.
