Ongoing Tensions Between BJP and Trinamool Congress in Kolkata Amid Clashes
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) The ongoing political feud between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress escalated on Sunday following violent confrontations between their supporters at Girish Park in central Kolkata.
These clashes took place just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech in the city on Saturday afternoon, resulting in injuries to a Kolkata Police inspector and a West Bengal cabinet member.
The police have detained four individuals linked to the unrest after extensive overnight operations. The BJP's West Bengal unit has asserted that the police actions were biased, claiming that their supporters were unfairly targeted while tensions were incited by activists from the ruling party, who allegedly attacked a bus transporting BJP supporters to the rally at Brigade Parade Ground.
Although neither party has filed an FIR, the city police initiated an investigation after registering a complaint and apprehending four individuals, three of whom are identified as BJP supporters: Krishanu Bose, Sunny Dey, and Charanjit Singh.
Sajal Ghosh, a BJP councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, contended that the three arrested supporters were nowhere near the scene when the conflict erupted. He challenged the Kolkata Police to disclose CCTV footage and mobile tower locations from that time, alleging that the arrests were made under pressure from the Trinamool Congress and that attempted murder charges were unjustly applied.
In response, Abhishek Banerjee, General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, condemned the situation, highlighting that the incident involved the injury of Dr. Sashi Panja, the Minister for Women & Child Development and Social Welfare, framing it as an assault not only on a female minister but on all women in the state.
"This reflects the BJP's culture of violence. They aim to import their provocative politics into West Bengal, seeking to disrupt harmony and instill fear. Such actions will neither be forgiven nor forgotten. West Bengal will not stand for BJP's saffron hooliganism," Banerjee stated.
On Saturday, the Election Commission (EC) requested a comprehensive report from Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar regarding the clashes. The EC also sought information about the attack on Minister Shashi Panja's home following the unrest, along with a detailed explanation as to why central paramilitary forces, already deployed in the state for the forthcoming Assembly elections, were not utilized to manage the situation.
