ECI Demands New Report from Kolkata Police on March 14 Violence in Girish Park
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 19 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested an updated report from Kolkata Police regarding the violence that unfolded in the streets of Girish Park in North Kolkata on March 14. This incident occurred in front of the home of a member of the West Bengal cabinet amidst clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists.
The turmoil coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the city to address a significant rally for his party at the Brigade Parade Ground.
A source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal indicated that the previous report submitted to the Commission by the Kolkata Police failed to adequately address why the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), which was already present in the city, was not called upon to manage the situation at Girish Park on that day, particularly in front of the residence of Dr. Sashi Panja, the West Bengal Minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare.
“The Commission expressed strong discontent regarding the lack of a critical report from the Kolkata Police on this key issue, prompting them to ask for an immediate submission that specifically answers this question,” the insider revealed.
As of now, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the clashes at Girish Park.
In contrast, the BJP has alleged that the city police are unfairly targeting their party members, asserting that the violence commenced when ruling party supporters attacked a bus transporting BJP supporters to the Brigade Parade Ground for the Prime Minister's rally.
Meanwhile, supporters of the Trinamool Congress have claimed that stones were thrown at Panja's residence during the unrest.
The Trinamool Congress members have accused BJP activists of these actions while heading to the Prime Minister’s rally. The state minister herself alleged that she was also a target during the chaos. The BJP countered these claims, asserting that Trinamool workers hurled bricks at their activists as they marched through Girish Park.
