Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) The leader of an inter-state drug trafficking syndicate has been apprehended in Kolkata, according to police reports released on Tuesday.
The suspect has been named Enarul Sheikh.
Sources from the Malda district police revealed that the infamous criminal was taken into custody on Monday during a raid conducted in the area governed by the Entally police station.
Following intelligence reports, a specialized unit from the Malda district police collaborated with the Kolkata Police to execute the operation. After an extensive search, Enarul was captured in the act.
Residing in Malda, Enarul is a key figure in a substantial drug trafficking operation that sources raw materials for drug production from various northeastern states, manufactures brown sugar, and subsequently smuggles it nationwide.
On Tuesday, Abhijit Banerjee, the Malda District Superintendent of Police, stated that Enarul had amassed over crores of rupees through his illegal activities.
He had been evading capture for an extended period until the police finally achieved a breakthrough.
Alongside Enarul, his uncle, Bhablu alias Shawkat Sheikh, was also apprehended during the operation.
Authorities claim that both Enarul and Bhablu facilitated the transportation of raw materials for drug production into West Bengal from various northeastern locations, including Manipur and Assam.
“Enarul had mentored numerous young individuals in Kaliachak in the Malda district, instructing them on the production of brown sugar from these inputs. This brown sugar was then trafficked to various states via different agents. Enarul’s gang is known to operate in states like Bihar and Jharkhand. His group was also implicated in several gang conflicts in the Kaliachak area,” remarked a senior official of the Malda district police.
Recently, it has been noted that drug traffickers have been investing their illicit gains into the construction sector.
The accused will be presented in the Malda district court, where police will request a 10-day custody period.
Authorities assert that Enarul's arrest marks a significant victory in the state's campaign against drug trafficking.
Additionally, investigations are underway to explore any potential connections the accused may have with Bangladesh.
It has come to light that Enarul has ties with several influential figures.
