This extensive operation was executed by a collaborative team from the Siliguri Police Commissionerate and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the West Bengal Police, lasting approximately 12 hours from Thursday night into early Friday morning.
Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Singh stated that the arrested individuals had intentions to smuggle the confiscated drug shipment via the Siliguri corridor.
“Investigations are ongoing to identify other participants in this criminal network,” he noted.
According to sources within the Siliguri Police Commissionerate, the increasing involvement of women in narcotics trafficking is a concerning new trend in this corridor.
“During the initial operations post-midnight on Thursday, four individuals, including one woman, were detained with 600 grams of very high-quality brown sugar. In a subsequent operation early Friday, the joint team apprehended two women near the National Highways adjacent to Bagdogra Airport and confiscated 902 grams of similarly high-quality brown sugar from their belongings.
The two women arrested have been identified as Shahina Begum and Gulbasana Begum.
“These women obtained the drugs from Malda district and intended to distribute them within the Siliguri corridor,” the official stated. All six detainees are set to be presented in a district court in Siliguri on Friday afternoon, where the public prosecutor will request their police custody.
