Major Restructuring of Kolkata Police Ahead of Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 5 (NationPress) In preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has enacted transfers involving the Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of various police stations across Kolkata, as confirmed by an official on Sunday.
Among the notable changes, Hirak Dalpati, who previously headed the Park Street police station, has been reassigned to the Intelligence Department. In his place, Neelkanth Roy, formerly with the Detective Department at Lalbazar, will now lead the Park Street station.
Additionally, Raj Kumar Mishra, the Additional OC at Shyampukur police station, has been moved to Gariahat police station. Meanwhile, Manish Singh, who served as the Additional OC of Entali police station, will take over the responsibilities at Vijayganj Bazar police station. Furthermore, Manoj Dutta has been recalled from the STF to assume the OC position at Chetla police station.
The ECI's efforts to transfer bureaucrats and police officials come ahead of the two-phase elections scheduled in the state. This significant reshuffle within the Kolkata Police was initiated by the Commission.
Orders numbered 181 and 182 have facilitated the transfer of several inspectors, resulting in the reassignment of OCs from key police stations to roles within the Detective Department, STF, or Special Branch. For instance, Amitabh Sarkar, the OC of Chetla Police Station, has also been moved to the STF.
In addition, OCs at Hare Street and Thakurpukur police stations have exchanged positions, with Lopsang Tshering Bhutia and Rajiv Sahu now mutually transferred.
This directive also entails some adjustments and modifications to previous orders numbered 174 and 175 issued on March 29.
Notably, tensions escalated in Bhabanipur during a roadshow held prior to the nomination filing by BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari, which saw attendance from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Following this incident, the Election Commission reached out to the state Chief Secretary, demanding action regarding the Bhabanipur event, leading to the suspension of four police officers due to law and order issues. The Commission has also mandated a swift appointment of replacements in those four positions. In this context, the Commission has restructured the OCs of six police stations within Kolkata Police in less than 24 hours.
