Konda Surekha, dropped from the Telangana Cabinet for alleged indiscipline, on Friday, 4 September publicly denied any connection to social media posts circulating under her name — a denial that came just one day after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy formally moved to remove her from office. The posts, attributed to Surekha and reading 'big update soon' and 'the wait is almost over', had fuelled speculation about her next political move.

The Denial and Official Accounts

Surekha clarified directly on X that neither she nor her family had any connection to the news or posts circulating under their name across social media platforms. She also shared details of her official social media handles, urging both the media and the public to rely exclusively on information posted through those verified accounts. The clarification appeared aimed at pre-empting rumours about a potential political defection.

How the Cabinet Removal Unfolded

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Thursday to formally recommend Surekha's removal. The Governor subsequently issued a notification declaring that she ceased to be a minister with immediate effect. The recommendation followed approval from the Indian National Congress (INC) high command, which had spent two to three days in consultations with state leaders, including the Chief Minister and state Congress president Mahesh Kumar Goud. Surekha herself had meetings with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and state in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan ahead of the decision.

The Disciplinary Trail

The action against Surekha was rooted in a report from the state unit's Disciplinary Committee, which recommended strong action against her and G. Chinna Reddy — subsequently removed as Vice Chairman of the Telangana Planning Board. The trigger was a show-cause notice issued after Surekha's daughter Sushmitha made remarks against Revanth Reddy at a public event in Warangal district last month, also levelling corruption allegations against the Chief Minister's family members. Sushmitha's outburst was reportedly prompted by Revanth Reddy's public appeal in Parkal to vote for sitting MLA Revuri Prakash Reddy in the next elections — a constituency Sushmitha had long aspired to contest from. Sushmitha declared she would contest from Parkal even if Prakash Reddy was fielded as the Congress candidate.

Surekha's Counter-Allegations

Condemning her removal, Surekha on Thursday alleged that Revanth Reddy had blackmailed the Congress high command to oust her. She specifically accused the Chief Minister's brothers, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and MP Vem Narender Reddy, of conspiring to target her. Despite the acrimony, Surekha stated that she and her husband Konda Murali would not quit the Congress. When asked whether she planned to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or float a new political party, she was categorical: 'I am not going anywhere.'

The episode marks a significant internal rupture within the Congress government in Telangana, less than a year after the party swept to power in the state.
