Kozhikode, March 3 (NationPress) K.P. Unnikrishnan, a distinguished former Union Minister and a six-time Member of Parliament representing Vadakara, Kerala, has passed away at the age of 89, marking the conclusion of a remarkable political journey that spanned over three decades in the national arena.

He was born on September 20, 1936, into a family hailing from the Malabar coast and was the son of E. Kunhikannan Nair.

Unnikrishnan pursued his education at Madras Christian College, Chennai, and later earned his law degree in the same city.

His initial political ideologies were influenced by his involvement with the Socialist Party and the Praja Socialist Party before he joined the Indian National Congress in the 1960s.

By 1962, he had risen to become a member of the All India Congress Committee.

Prior to fully committing to politics, Unnikrishnan worked as a journalist, contributing pieces as a special correspondent for Mathrubhumi and various other publications.

His electoral career commenced in 1971 when he was selected as the Congress candidate from Vadakara.

Unnikrishnan achieved the remarkable feat of winning six consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 1971, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, and 1991, demonstrating his strong connection with the constituency.

Despite changing political allegiances—moving to Congress(U) in 1980 and later to the Indian Congress (Socialist) in 1984—he remained undefeated in elections until 1996, when he faced his only defeat in Vadakara.

From 1981 to 1984, he held the position of leader of Congress (Secular) in Parliament and was a member of the Public Accounts Committee from 1980 to 1982.

Unnikrishnan served as the Union Minister for Telecommunications, Shipping, and Surface Transport in the Cabinet of V. P. Singh from 1989 to 1990.

During his ministerial tenure, he played a pivotal role in managing the evacuation of Indians amid the Gulf War crisis.

It seems somewhat ironic that he passed away during a time when West Asia has once again become a conflict zone.

After stepping back from active politics following his 1996 defeat, he split his time between New Delhi and his ancestral home in Panniyankara, Kozhikode, dedicating himself to reading and writing.

Point of View

K.P. Unnikrishnan's passing signifies not only the end of an era for Kerala politics but also highlights the profound influence of dedicated public servants on the democratic fabric of our nation. His electoral successes and ministerial roles demonstrate the value of commitment to public service.
