Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 21 (NationPress) The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is set to orchestrate a significant celebration this Sunday at Vaikom in Kottayam, commemorating the centenary of the historic 'Vaikom Satyagraha'.
This pivotal satyagraha, a foundational struggle within Kerala's social reform movement, spanned 603 days and marked a crucial shift in the battle against caste-based discrimination.
KPCC President and MLA Sunny Joseph announced that the centenary event aims to celebrate the essence of the satyagraha, which transformed Kerala's socio-political environment and bolstered the pursuit of equality and justice.
The gathering will be conducted in a grand and inclusive manner, honoring the leaders, reformers, and the everyday individuals who bravely fought for the right to public access.
The main commemorative assembly is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Vaikom Satyagraha Memorial Hall.
This session will be led by KPCC Vice President and Chairman of the Centenary Celebration Committee, V.P. Sajeendran.
The event will be inaugurated by Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan.
Prominent members of the Political Affairs Committee, KPCC officials, MPs, MLAs, and senior leaders are anticipated to be in attendance.
To preserve and promote the legacy of the Vaikom Satyagraha, KPCC has initiated a series of observance programs throughout 2023.
The centenary celebrations were officially launched on March 30, 2023, by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge.
This was succeeded by the 'History Congress' held in Thiruvananthapuram on December 5 and 6, 2023, which convened historians, scholars, and political figures to reflect on the movement's significance.
A memorial pavilion dedicated to Vaikom Satyagraha freedom fighter Amachadi Thevan was also unveiled, officiated by Dr. Ambedkar’s grandson, Anand Raj Ambedkar.
On March 30, 2024, a significant anniversary conference will take place at Vaikom, marking 100 years since the commencement of the agitation.
The forthcoming November event will emphasize both historical contemplation and contemporary relevance, underscoring the principles of social justice, democratic rights, and equal access, which remain at the heart of the 'Vaikom Satyagraha'.
