Is Krishnagiri Set to Launch an Intensive Awareness Drive to Combat Sex Determination and Selective Abortions?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Nov 29 (NationPress) The administration of Krishnagiri district is preparing to implement a comprehensive awareness campaign at Anganwadi centres across selected blocks, aiming to combat illegal sex determination practices and gender-based abortions.
This initiative arises from concerning statistics revealing a distorted gender ratio, increasing cases of child marriage, and the rise in teenage pregnancies in various areas of the district.
The Collector of Krishnagiri, C. Dinesh Kumar, highlighted that decoy operations initiated by the Health Department have already led to the apprehension of individuals involved in unlawful sex-determination activities.
He mentioned that the forthcoming awareness campaign intends to fortify preventive actions and educate local communities.
Blocks and villages exhibiting a history of gender ratio imbalance and heightened vulnerability among young girls have been earmarked for focused intervention.
“We will conduct awareness sessions regarding the PCPNDT Act in these targeted zones. Additionally, more educational posters and resources will be placed in Anganwadi centres and schools. We have already disseminated awareness posters addressing child marriage and offenses against children. To further inhibit the misuse of scanning technologies for sex determination, we will implement further measures soon,” he stated, emphasizing that lasting social transformation is crucial to address these issues.
The Superintendent of Police in Krishnagiri, P. Thangadurai, mentioned that the police are actively executing programs focused on child marriage, child abuse, and drug awareness among students. Utilizing data from the Health Department, areas with the lowest sex ratios and the highest child marriage rates will receive increased attention from the police in these coordinated awareness efforts.
Moreover, sensitization programs will be organized for police personnel and health workers to enhance monitoring of illegal scanning operations.
Health Department officials are currently compiling block-level data on gender ratio disparities and suspected sex-determination cases, which will soon be communicated to the district administration.
It was noted that sex-selective abortions frequently occur in families where the mother already has one or two daughters.
Many of these families regularly attend Anganwadi centres, underscoring the importance of interventions based in these facilities.
This renewed district-level campaign arises amid heightened concerns regarding sex-selective abortions.
Recently, a 34-year-old woman from the vicinity of Kaveripattinam, who already had two daughters, reportedly underwent three abortions, the latest of which has been identified as sex-selective.
This incident has prompted an investigation by health authorities, underscoring the pressing need for targeted community awareness initiatives.
